Carl Cox reflects on his Ibiza roots and teases bold new chapter at UNVRS superclub: Watch
Carl Cox doesn’t just perform in Ibiza – he breathes it. For over four decades, he lived and shaped the culture of the island, gradually watching it evolve from a hidden Balearic gem to the global capital of club music. Now, in 2025, after nearly a decade away from regular residencies, Cox confidently steps back into the spotlight with UNVRS – a new superclub where, once again, he will curate and headline Sundays with a vision rooted in experience, emotion, and energy.

“When I first got there, I was very young and I didn’t have a lot of money.”

From San Antonio to Superclubs: Carl Cox’s Ibiza Origins
“I was just a curious young DJ,” Carl Cox said. “I spent my early days in San Antonio, taking everything in.” He first arrived in Ibiza in 1985, when most UK tourists still flocked to Magaluf. Back then, local Spanish DJs controlled the booths, and clubs like Amnesia, Ku, and Café del Mar catered mostly to locals. “Nobody really knew who I was,” he admitted, but the island’s sound systems, scenic landscapes, and music-first crowds captured his heart.
His bond with Ibiza deepened through his legendary 15-year residency at Space Ibiza. “I did lose my church based on what had happened there,” he said, referring to Space’s closure in 2016. “But to be able to now put that behind us and move forward, this is a new beginning for me.” That closure left a void—not just for Cox, but for a generation that grew up under his reign on the island.
“Nobody really knew who I was, but also a lot of the clubs were basically owned by Spanish people, run by Spanish people.”

Now, that next chapter unfolds at UNVRS, located on the former site of Privilege, the world’s largest nightclub. With a custom-built sound system and next-level production, UNVRS gives Carl Cox the freedom to design each Sunday from the ground up. “I don’t want people showing up five minutes before I go on—I want them there for the whole journey,” he said. His vision goes beyond the two-hour headline slot: it’s about atmosphere, energy, and community.
Expect the Unexpected
He plans to showcase more than just techno. “Expect the unexpected always,” Cox said, promising sets that flow from house to hard techno, drum & bass, funk, and beyond. “There should be no boundaries or there should be no limits to where we can go with this musically.” As always, Cox intends to uplift the next wave of talent. “I’ve got a lot of music I really want to share to people,” he said. “And support new up-and-coming artists as well.”

“To come back in 2025, nearly a decade later… that’s a huge gap based on me not being able to do what I love.”
– Carl Cox on the significance of his return
After nearly 40 years of playing on the island, his connection remains unshaken. “Not being there over the last couple of years has been really difficult… I’ve seen it as a bit of a hole in the heart.” Now, he feels reborn. “I feel like a kid with a new toy.”
As UNVRS prepares to open its doors, Cox returns not as a nostalgic figure, but as an architect of Ibiza’s next era—proving once again that no one understands the rhythm of the island quite like him.
