David Guetta reflects on the real job of a DJ in raw new interview

Home Interviews David Guetta reflects on the real job of a DJ in raw new interview

In a powerful new interview with French outlet Guettapen, David Guetta took a step back from global stardom to reflect on the essence of DJing. Despite becoming one of the most streamed artists on the planet, he made it clear: real DJing isn’t about fame—it’s about reading the room, holding attention, and serving the crowd.

“I used to play eight hours a night, six nights a week,” he recalled. “You had to hold people.” He passed that wisdom to his son, now starting his own DJ path. After struggling through a sparse set, Guetta told him: “That’s the job. If two people leave, you fix it.”

Over the years, Guetta evolved from wedding gigs and high school parties to shaping global dance culture. With over 40 billion streams, 50 million records sold, and massive hits like ‘Titanium’, ‘When Love Takes Over’, and ‘Memories’, he still credits his early grind for keeping him grounded. Most recently, he received the BRITs’ ‘Producer of the Year’ award, a nod to his behind-the-scenes influence.

Despite collaborations with the world’s biggest artists – SIA, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Black Eyed Peas, and more—Guetta emphasized humility and responsiveness as a DJ’s core traits. “You look at your room, you have your toys, but you’re there to keep people,” he said.

From underground raves to chart-topping singles, his message is clear: success starts on the floor, not in the charts. “All this is learning,” he added. “It’s part of what a DJ should be.”
