It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news of Eamon Downes, a true pioneer of the breakbeat hardcore scene and one half of the iconic act Liquid, who has passed away at 55.
Eamon Downes, a pivotal figure in the early UK rave scene and one half of the influential breakbeat hardcore act Liquid, has sadly passed away at the age of 55 after a battle with a brain tumour.
Downes, also known as Ame, formed Liquid in 1991 with Shane Heneghan (DJ Model) after they met at a record store in East London. Their debut release, the “Liquid EP,” quickly gained traction, featuring tracks like “Sweet Harmony” and “Liquid Is Liquid” that became anthems of the burgeoning British rave culture. These tracks, with their distinctive blend of breakbeats, house, and hardcore elements, caught the attention of XL Recordings, who officially released “Sweet Harmony” in 1992, propelling it to mainstream success.
Even after Heneghan’s departure, Downes continued Liquid as a solo project, further solidifying the act’s reputation for innovative dancefloor fillers. Tracks such as “Time to Get Up” and “One Love Family” — with its memorable flamenco guitars — were celebrated by Mixmag as “singles of the week.”
In 1995, Eamon Downes released the album “Culture” under the Liquid moniker, exploring influences from trance and featuring remixes by artists like Way Out West. A new version of “Sweet Harmony” from this album once again charted in the UK Top 20, showcasing the enduring appeal of his sound. Downes continued to produce music, releasing albums such as “Energy Flows” (2017), “Back to Rave 1” (2018), “Spacemonkey” (2019), “Lethal” (2021), “Back to Rave 2” (2023), and “Atmospheric Rave” (2023).
Eamon Downes’s legacy is etched into the fabric of UK dance music, remembered for his pioneering sound that helped define an era. His contributions, particularly through Liquid’s iconic tracks, will continue to resonate with fans and inspire new generations.
