In a recent video posted on YouTube, famous YouTuber and music personality Rick Beato shows how easy it is to make songs using Generative AI. Citing the controversial AI-generated band Velvet Sundown which rose up the ranks on Spotify, Beato walks the viewers through about how one can curate an entire artist profile using free AI tools.
He starts off by using ChatGPT to create an artist profile and to decide the genre of the music. After deciding the artist’s name to be Eli Mercer, he types in a prompt in Claude which then generates well-structured song lyrics. “I did nothing other than type in a title and Claude created the lyrics”, states a deluded Beato. As the final step, he inputs these lyrics into Suno which makes two complete versions of the same song. Using AI, Beato was able to generate a full-length song in a matter of minutes.
As accessibility to AI tools is ever increasing, such tools could act as substitutes for actual songwriting and composing. Speaking about these fears, he says “I don’t need 10 years or 40 years to learn to play an instrument. I don’t need to be able to be a good lyricist to write songs.” Furthermore, he adds, “You’re basically just telling a program to take other people’s ideas and create songs for you. And you have nothing to do with this except typing in a couple of sentences.”
As harsh as it may sound, this might reflect the truth. With completely AI-generated artists like The Velvet Sundown gaining a lot of streams, this might not be the last such incident.
