Normally envisioned as a picturesque vacation destination, the island of Ibiza is unfortunately being hit with historic weather this week. As Hurricane Gabrielle strikes the region, increased rainflow is causing severe flooding.

Although the tourist season is coming to an end, Ibiza remains a prominent destination for travellers, as well as home to many who help support the infrastructure and entertainment that make the region such a well-attended locale. The popularity of the Spanish island has only grown in recent years, prompting battles with local officials as the cost of living goes up, and attempts to maintain a clean and civil atmosphere continue to emerge amongst local authorities. The 2025 season saw a record 1.4 million passengers arrive through the Ibiza airport in July alone. As the calendar turns to October, the island is now facing a disaster from natural causes as high winds and rain pour into the region.

The extreme weather has seen officials place a red alert for the island starting at 11:00 am local time on Tuesday, September 30th, and extending for several hours, with a yellow alert in place afterward. The islands of Ibiza and Formentera are expected to receive up to 180mm (7in) of rainfall, and fire and rescue teams have been put in place to assist the public. Increasing rainfall has closed off access to the towns of Sant Antoni de Portmany and Santa Eulària, while Ibiza’s E-10, the main road of the region, is flooded. As Hurricane Gabrielle continues to impact the region, individuals are urged to stay indoors, avoid flooded regions, and seek higher ground should water enter homes.
