Paul Kalkbrenner releases ‘Dreaming On’ featuring Depeche Mode: Listen
Paul Kalkbrenner has released ‘Dreaming On,’ the third single from his upcoming album ‘The Essence’, arriving this fall on B1 / Sony Music. The track pays homage to Depeche Mode‘s 2001 classic ‘Dream On,’ merging the melancholic weight of the original with the warmth and minimalism of Kalkbrenner’s signature sound.
Rather than re-creating, Kalkbrenner transforms the source material into a hypnotic techno-driven landscape. A steady groove underpins floating hooks and evolving textures, offering a respectful continuation of the original while remaining unmistakably his own. As a result, the track becomes more than a remake—it acts as a natural fit within the evolving world of ‘The Essence.’
Over several years, Kalkbrenner built the album in an apartment styled with vintage flair and modern detail, shaping tracks that feel organic yet forward-thinking. “It’s about the essential. This is an album I can truly stand behind. I consider it my best,” he says. “Sure, there may be more well-known hits on my other albums, but there were always two or three filler tracks. This one doesn’t have a single filler. Not even a filler moment.”
Since emerging from Berlin’s early ‘90s rave scene, Kalkbrenner has redefined electronic music through groundbreaking projects. From ‘Berlin Calling’ and the enduring single ‘Sky & Sand’ to arena tours, Tomorrowland headliner sets, and even performing before 400,000 at the Berlin Wall anniversary, he has consistently bridged club culture with the wider world. With ‘The Essence’, his first album in seven years, Kalkbrenner once again pushes electronic music’s boundaries.
