Ron Carroll, the Chicago-born DJ, singer, songwriter, and producer widely celebrated as ‘The Minister of Sound’, has died at the age of 56. According to reports, Carroll passed away from a heart attack. His death marks a profound loss for the global house community, which he helped shape for more than three decades.
From his earliest days singing in a church choir to discovering house music at a high school dance, Carroll’s musical path always carried both spirit and energy. By the late 1980s, he had already established himself as a DJ and opened his own club, showcasing his entrepreneurial drive. In 1993, he released his debut record ‘My Prayer’, which laid the foundation for gospel house and earned him his iconic nickname.
Carroll’s breakthrough came in 1994 when Louie Vega invited him to write lyrics for Barbara Tucker’s ‘I Get Lifted’. From there, he became a central figure in Chicago’s Deep Soul production company, working with Mike Dunn and Byron Stingily. Across his career, he collaborated with giants like Bob Sinclar, Axwell, and E-Smoove, delivering timeless anthems including ‘Back Together’ and ‘What a Wonderful World’.
Beyond collaborations, Carroll also co-founded MOS Productions with Spero Pagos and later launched Body Music Records, pushing his vision of house worldwide. His influence expanded across Europe, where he contributed to French house classics like Superfunk’s ‘Lucky Star’ and Kluster’s ‘My Love’.
Remarkably, Carroll remained musically active until the very end. Just last Friday, he released ‘Lost’ on Carrillo Music, once again proving his dedication to evolving sounds. With Ron Carroll passing, house music loses one of its greatest voices – but Carroll’s legacy, built on faith, groove, and unrelenting passion, will continue to move dancefloors worldwide.
