Ireland to offer musicians €325 weekly under new Basic Income for the Arts scheme
The Irish government has confirmed plans to permanently implement the Basic Income for the Arts (BIA), offering musicians and creative workers in Ireland a weekly payment of €325 starting in September 2026. The initiative, part of Budget 2026, aims to stabilize the financial situation of up to 2,200 artists nationwide.
After a successful 2022 pilot, the scheme proved essential in reducing financial uncertainty for artists while allowing them to dedicate more time to creative work. Consequently, Minister for Culture Patrick O’Donovan secured the program’s continuation, marking a major policy milestone for Ireland cultural sector.
Under the new system, eligible participants will receive monthly payments, taxed according to their individual circumstances. Importantly, the scheme will function independently from other welfare payments, ensuring that artists can sustain their creative practice without bureaucratic overlap. Additionally, a “control group” analysis from the pilot revealed improved well-being and productivity among participants, reinforcing the scheme’s long-term cultural value.
The government initially planned to accommodate 2,000 artists, and RTÉ reported that another 200 could join if more funds become available, signaling possible expansion in future budgets. Moreover, O’Donovan emphasized his commitment to making the scheme sustainable, stating, “This scheme is the envy of the world, and must be made futureproof and sustainable.”
