The future of Budapest’s iconic Sziget Festival now hangs in the balance, as ownership changes, financial pressures, and delayed ticket sales collectively threaten the 2026 edition. Earlier this week, Mayor Gergely Karácsony revealed that Sziget Zrt.’s CEO has initiated the termination of the festival’s long-standing agreement with the city, thereby deepening doubts over the event’s continuity.
Adding to the uncertainty, Forbes Hungary reported that Sziget founder Károly Gerendai is urgently searching for new investors to rescue the festival. Speaking to HVG360, Gerendai confirmed that the festival’s American owner, KKR, which acquired full control in 2022, is preparing to withdraw. Mounting losses-estimated at nearly 2 billion Hungarian forints (€5 million)-and Hungary’s unstable business climate have reportedly prompted the decision.
“Tickets for next year’s event should already be on sale,” Gerendai said, warning that without immediate investment, hosting the 2026 edition may become impossible. Negotiations are currently underway for Gerendai to regain control of the event, but time is running out, with ticket sales needing to start within weeks to keep the festival alive.
Meanwhile, industry experts such as Dr. Richárd Andrejszki note that broader issues, including changing youth culture and the lack of consistent year-round engagement, have also weakened Sziget’s position. Despite this, Mayor Karácsony remains hopeful, stating, “I trust that this cancellation does not mean the end of an era, but the hope of a new beginning.”
Founded in 1993, Sziget has grown into one of the world’s top ten festivals, shaping Budapest’s global reputation. Yet without swift action, the 2026 event could mark a pause-or even an end-in its three-decade legacy.
