In an attempt to preserve Berlin’s nightlife legacy, the city’s iconic Watergate nightclub may re-open in the former home of SchwuZ.

In a bid to preserve the nightlife legacy within the city, Berlin’s iconic Watergate nightclub may be re-opening in the former home of SchwuZ, the oldest queer club in the German capital. Located in Neukölln’s KINDL Brauerei complex, SchwuZ shut down at the start of November due to bankruptcy, with the venue having faced monthly deficits of €30,000 to €60,000 prior to this outcome. A venue with a cultural significance to many, Berlin’s Senator for Culture, Sarah Wedl-Wilson, suggested that a smaller venue should take over in order to continue the legacy, and with Watergate having shut down in 2024, this now seems like the ideal candidate to take over the premises.

Following an immense 22-year run, Watergate sadly had to close its doors at the end of last year, with inflation, the energy crisis, and rising rent costs cited as the main reasons behind this decision. Having played a significant role in the ascent of dance music in the city itself, Watergate was home to some of the greatest acts within our community, with the likes of Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin just a couple of the most memorable acts to perform at this immersive venue. Catering to a generation of both dance music enthusiasts and artists alike, Watergate earned its reputation every single step of the way, and as time progressed, its impact was as profound, and of course, cultural in more ways than none.

Looking to re-ignite its existence, the return of Watergate signals a significant moment in Berlin’s ability to preserve its nightlife culture, and with Watergate having hosted a summer open-air series at Sage Beach despite the venues closer; it only feels right that they could have the first say in taking over yet another iconic establishment that has sadly come to its end after five decades in business. One to keep a close eye on for sure, we will keep you updated with the final outcome once the official decision has been made in due course.
