New research* reveals that house parties continue to shape the future of DJ culture, especially for younger generations across the UK and Europe. Although nightlife faces ongoing pressure from rising costs and venue closures, the survey-conducted by AlphaTheta with more than 2,500 participants—shows that 35% of Gen Z and 34% of Millennials believe the best DJ sets happen in living rooms, basements, and improvised spaces rather than on main stages. Moreover, these intimate environments give emerging DJs the freedom to experiment without the pressure of a formal club setup.

As the data highlights, 28% of Millennials and 25% of Gen Z played their first-ever DJ gig at a house party. Additionally, one in three Gen Z respondents said the first DJ set they ever witnessed also happened at a house party, and those early encounters encouraged them to start mixing themselves. These findings reinforce the role of DIY culture as a foundation for creativity, community and low-pressure exploration.

Several leading artists began their journeys in these same spaces. Fabio, the drum and bass pioneer of Fabio & Grooverider, along with James Hype and BBC 1Xtra’s Snoochie Shy, credits house parties as essential training grounds. As Fabio explained, “House parties and DIY spots were everything back in the day… Those spaces built communities and gave people a chance to experiment and find their sound.”

This shift arrives as major venues shut their doors, including Bristol’s Motion and Leeds’ The Wire, while London’s Corsica Studios prepares to close in 2026. However, half of Gen Z (50%) and more than half of Millennials (55%) agree that house parties now offer the ideal setting for discovering new music—proving that the heartbeat of nightlife continues to thrive in intimate, self-made spaces.
