OpenAI reportedly working on a generative AI music tool

OpenAI is developing a new generative AI music tool that can compose original pieces from text and audio prompts. The software is expected to allow users to add custom soundtracks or instrumental layers to videos, with features aimed at musicians and content creators. While OpenAI has not announced an official launch date, it remains unclear whether the tool will exist as a standalone product or as part of existing platforms such as ChatGPT or Sora.

The upcoming system reportedly includes multi-vocal track generation and AI-assisted mixing. These additions could make the tool valuable for creators seeking fast and flexible sound design options. OpenAI is working with music students from Juilliard to label and explain musical notes and patterns. The partnership shows that OpenAI is trying to create an AI that understands music’s rhythm, emotion, and expression instead of just using raw data. The new tool builds on it’s earlier projects, MuseNet and Jukebox. Jukebox, introduced in 2020, could generate songs across genres such as blues, reggae, and pop.

However, OpenAI’s re-entry into music generation comes amid growing tension around copyright, ownership, and compensation. Many artists have voiced concerns that AI companies are using copyrighted music to train systems without permission or payment. Paul McCartney and other musicians have publicly called for stronger legal safeguards. Platforms like Spotify have already faced criticism for allowing AI-generated artists and songs. In a recent move, Spotify removed 75 million AI songs to protect artists and listeners, highlighting the severity of the situation.

If successful, OpenAI’s new tool could reshape music production by making composition and mixing more accessible, but it may also deepen the debate over what it means to create, own, and value music in the AI era.
