Blank & Jones: Transcending dance music since the late 90s

Home Editorials Blank & Jones: Transcending dance music since the late 90s

Trance pioneers in their own right, electronic duo Blank & Jones have transcended dance music for close to two decades now.

Elevating the trance genre in a manner that is truly unique, German electronic duo Blank & Jones have paved the way for dance music as a whole, with each of their endeavours thus far speaking volumes on the genius mind(s) that they possess. Consisting of Piet Blank and Jaspa Jones, this pioneering act has left no doubt on the imagination, and as they have pulled sonic threads through trance, lounge, downtempo, and electronica since the late 1990s, it only makes sense that they have cemented their legendary status from the very beginning of their career.

Allowing wider audiences to not only appreciate their music as a whole, but also immerse themselves in the endless possibilities surrounding this genre, Blank & Jones delivered that sense of euphoria with each of their releases, and as their presence grew, so did their ideology of trance music expanding way beyond the underground scene. From peak-time trance anthems to even advocating for those chill-out grooves along the way, Blank & Jones have transcended dance music in its own right, and in doing so, have blessed us all with some true dance-floor fillers.

An Era of Pure Trance Anthems (1997-2003)

Ascending at the very same time as the genre itself, Blank & Jones’s first single was released in 1997, in the form of ‘Sunrise.’ A clear taste of what was to come, the duo embraced their musical journey from the offset, whilst the string of releases that followed only further solidified their eye for detail and pure commitment towards the craft they are so passionate about. Proving just this, it was singles in the form of ‘Heartbeat’ (1998), ‘Flying to the Moon’ (1998), ‘Cream’ (1999), ‘After Love’ (1999), ‘The Nightfly’ (2000), ‘DJ Culture’ (2000), ‘Beyond Time’ (2000), ‘Sound of Machines’ (2000), ‘Nightclubbing’ (2001), ‘Desire’ (2002), and ‘Summer Sun’ (2003), among others, that ignited an era of pure trance anthems celebrated to this very day.

Albums That Define Generations of Trance Enthusiasts

In Da Mix (1999): A debut album that perfectly illustrated Blank & Jones’s dance-floor-driven productions, ‘In Da Mix’ offered that feel-good and high-energy vibe that was frequently sought after, with each featured track making for the ultimate debut body of work. Including hit singles such as ‘Cream,’ ‘Flying to the Moon,’ and ‘After Love,’ fans alike were now presented with that melodic side that was eagerly awaiting to unfold.

DJ Culture (2000): A body of work that to this day is worth its weight in gold, ‘DJ Culture’ was a match made in heaven for those late-night energetic vibes that have you begging for more in an instant. From the title track that defines Blank & Jones’s greatness, to absolute bangers such as ‘The Nightfly,’ this true was an album for the ages, and it was felt through each and every track.

Nightclubbing (2001): A first glimpse into the musical direction that was to follow, ‘Nightclubbing’ maintained that club-focused aspect that was prominent in their earlier work; however, a darker and more ambient side was now slowly introduced. Featuring classics in the form of ‘Beyond Time,’ ‘DJs, Fans & Freaks (DFF)’ and the title track itself, this was yet another example of their versatility within the dance scene and beyond.

Substance (2002): A change was now evident, with a more mature approach at the centre of it all, ‘Substance’ offered that deeper side of trance, with the anthems slowly decreasing, and an emotional restraint becoming evident. From tracks in the form of ‘Desire,’ ‘D-Battery,’ ‘Closer to the Edge’ and everything in between, this is a body of work that will have you hooked from start to finish, no questions asked.

Redefining classic trance every step of the way, Blank & Jones would eventually opt for a different route, the one of chill-out culture. From 2003 onwards, the multifaceted duo delivers nothing less than the most relaxing of vibes, and as seen from their distinct impact to begin with, their legacy continues to evolve on the daily. A sound that has shaped generations, Blank & Jones have mastered accessibility by all means, and as their music followed the rise of GatecrasherLove Parade, and even Ibiza’s superclub era, this was, is and will always be an act that should be on anyone’s radar at any given moment in time. Truly inspirational, the duo is now closing 2025 on a high, as all their singles from 1998 to 2006 can be found on ‘The Extended Singles’ LP, ready for purchase here. One that shall not go amiss!
