Donna Summer posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has posthumously inducted Donna Summer, finally recognizing the songwriting legacy of one of disco’s most influential figures. The ceremony took place on December 15 at The Butterfly Room at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood, honoring Summer’s lasting impact on popular music.

Bruce Sudano, Donna Summer’s husband, attended the intimate Los Angeles event alongside their daughters, Brooklyn Sudano and Amanda Sudano Ramirez. Speaking about the recognition, Sudano emphasized how deeply the honor would have resonated with the late artist. “With all the accolades that she received over her career, being respected as a songwriter was always the thing that she felt was overlooked,” he said, adding that this induction would have meant everything to her.

Donna Summer shaped modern dance music not only as a performer but also as a writer, co-creating era-defining records such as ‘I Feel Love’, ‘Hot Stuff’, and ‘Love to Love You Baby’ alongside Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. Bellotte also received recognition this year as a non-performing nominee for his songwriting contributions.

Over the years, the industry has continued to celebrate Summer’s influence. She entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, just a year after her passing, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2024. That same year, the Grammy Hall of Fame also honored her work. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Sudano directed the 2023 HBO documentary Love to Love You, Donna Summer, further preserving her mother’s cultural legacy.

By inducting Donna Summer into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the industry formally acknowledges what generations of artists and fans have long understood — her songwriting helped shape the foundation of modern dance and pop music.
