Nightclub fire in Goa kills 25 at popular venue Birch by Romeo Lane

A devastating fire ripped through the popular Arpora nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane late Saturday night, killing 25 people and injuring around 50 others. The incident shook North Goa’s nightlife community and raised urgent concerns about safety standards across the region.

According to initial reports, many victims became trapped in the venue’s basement and service areas as flames spread shortly after midnight. Most of those who died were members of the club’s staff, though several tourists were also among the deceased. Meanwhile, emergency teams transported the injured to Goa Medical College, where treatment continues.

Authorities believe multiple lapses in safety compliance may have intensified the scale of the tragedy. They are investigating whether the venue lacked proper emergency exits or adequate fire-safety permissions—issues that may have prevented people from escaping in time. Police have opened cases against the Birch by Romeo Lane owners, its general manager and the event organisers. Additionally, several individuals have already been detained as part of the investigation.

Goa’s Chief Minister described the fire as one of the state’s most painful moments and pledged accountability for all responsible parties. The government announced financial assistance for the victims’ families, while support for the injured remains ongoing.

The incident has cast a shadow over Goa’s nightlife reputation and sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
