Mariah Carey ultra-rare 1988 demo tape sells for $54,050 at Wax Poetics auction
Mariah Carey early career history reached a new milestone as an ultra-rare 1988 demo cassette sold for $54,050 in a Wax Poetics archival auction. Offered in partnership with Arthur Baker and Brenda K. Starr, the sale exceeded expectations and set a new record as the highest-selling cassette by a female artist to ever reach public auction.
Notably, the cassette originated from Arthur Baker’s personal archive and traces back to a pivotal night in 1989. That evening, during a Christmas party, Brenda K. Starr introduced Carey and her demo to Tommy Mottola, a moment that would reshape pop music history. The tape, widely considered a collector’s ‘holy grail’, stands as one of the only surviving originals and the first of its kind to enter the public marketplace.
Moreover, the cassette captures seven formative recordings from 1988. Five early versions later evolved into tracks from Carey’s self-titled 1990 debut album, which produced four Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, while two additional songs remained unreleased and heavily mythologized among fans. Together, the recordings document Mariah Carey raw, pre-label creativity and musical range.
Produced and arranged alongside Ben Margulies and Chris Toland, the demos reveal early explorations of funk, quiet storm, synth-driven pop, and R&B foundations. As Toland recalled, “The songs were more primitive in demo form, but all the elements that led to the final record are there – the hooks, the background vocals, the kicks, the chords. Mariah already had it.”
Ultimately, the winning lot included the original cassette, a certificate of authenticity, archival notes, and extensive historical documentation. The sale further solidifies Wax Poetics’ archival auction series as a vital platform for preserving and elevating music history, following previous highlights celebrating Nightmares on Wax, Bootsy Collins, Don Blackman, Louie Vega, and Arthur Baker.
