Casio teases SX-C1, a handheld sampler with a retro look
At NAMM 2026, Casio displayed a handheld sampler prototype that could be hinting at a return to the category it once defined. Known for budget sampling keyboards like the SK-1 in the 1980s, it appears that Casio is now testing the waters again with a compact device labelled the SX-C1.
The SX-C1 is a small, handheld sampler with a retro look. The grey casing, D-pad navigation, and 16 numbered pads make it look more like a retro gaming console rather than a sampler. It supports 16-bit/48kHz sampling, has a built-in microphone, a line input, and supports file-transfer through USB-C. It also includes a built-in speaker and can be powered either by three AAA batteries or over USB.
As per the information so far, we know the SX-C1 allows users to store up to 10 banks of 16 samples, supported by 64GB of internal memory. Some of this storage is expected to include preset sounds, including few from the Casio’s archives. A small 1.3-inch OLED screen sits at the centre of the interface, with a D-pad and four buttons for navigation. Sliders and rotary controls can be seen below the OLED display, though this layout may not be the final one.
While Casio has not officially confirmed a release or timeline for the sampler, the display at NAMM 2026 is sure to have raised a few eyebrows.
