Frankie Knuckles’ unreleased DJ mix finally arrives on Apple Music

Apple Music has released a previously unreleased Frankie Knuckles DJ mix, making the historic project available for the first time in celebration of his birthday. Moreover, the platform has positioned the release as both a tribute to the late house pioneer and a way to support the ongoing work of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation.

Frankie compiled and mixed the set in 2011 under the title ‘Frankie Knuckles In The House DJ Mix’, however the project paused at his request as health issues limited his ability to properly promote it. Now, years later, the mix finally sees the light of day, giving fans a rare snapshot of his sound during that era and another reason to revisit the roots of house music.

“As stewards of Frankie’s legacy, we are thrilled and deeply honoured to share this previously unreleased project with his legion of fans,” said Frederick Dunson of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation. “It beautifully captures his quintessential Directors Cut sound in 2011… mixed in classical FK style!”

In addition, the release connects directly with the foundation’s mission, which supports LGBTQIA+ communities and AIDS prevention initiatives. That wider purpose adds extra weight to the moment, while keeping Frankie’s cultural impact at the centre of the conversation.

The tracklists also underline why Frankie’s influence still runs through modern club music. Alongside his own defining records such as ‘Your Love’ with Jamie Principle, ‘Where Love Lives’ with Alison Limerick, and ‘Tears’ with Satoshi Tomiie, the collection includes key remixes and selections tied to artists like Hercules & Love Affair, Sounds of Blackness, and Chaka Khan.
