Mike Posner just dropped a new version of ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’ that turns a decades-old story about fame, addiction, and loss into a moment of deep reflection. The original track became a huge hit after its 2015 release and Seeb remix, flipping a raw look at emptiness and substance use into a global anthem. Posner wrote the song from a real place. He openly said he took that pill at an Ibiza show partly to impress Avicii, and later linked getting sober with feeling “ten years older” as he looked at his life with clear eyes.

In the new online video version, he adds fresh lyrics that highlight his 10-year journey out of self-destruction and into sobriety. He now talks about being sober for a decade and facing loss, including the absence of Avicii:

i went back to Ibiza
and got a hotel by shore
and i’m 12 years older and im 10 years sober
but avicii isn’t here no more

Those lines hit hard because Tim Bergling’s death in 2018 came after his struggles with mental health and addiction made headlines worldwide. Posner’s new verse refers to that loss while underlining his own recovery path.

In the rest of the added lyrics, he talks about leaving the old lifestyle behind, trying to build a family, and putting his life in faith’s hands:

i moved outta LA
im tryna start a little family
cuz all the things i was chasing, and the things i was taking
had me headed towards tragedy

But now I really wanna live my life…
cuz I only get this one life…

This shift isn’t just musical. It’s emotional. It turns a song once tied to club culture into something personal and human. Undoubtedly, it shows Mike Posner confronting his past addictions, honoring loss, and telling people he’s found meaning beyond the pill-popping imagery that made the song famous.
