MTV shuts down music-only channels across UK and Europe after nearly 40 years on air

Home News MTV shuts down music-only channels across UK and Europe after nearly 40 years on air

After more than four decades of music television history, MTV has officially shut down its music-only channels across the United Kingdom and multiple international regions, marking the end of one of the most defining eras in broadcast music culture. According to BBC News, the channels that ceased broadcasting include MTV Music, 80s, 90s, Club MTV, and Live. The shutdown took effect on December 31, following an earlier restructuring announcement from MTV’s parent company, Paramount Skydance. In a symbolic final moment, every channel ended its broadcast by playing The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star” – the same song that launched MTV’s debut in 1981, closing the loop on nearly 40 years of music video history.

Part of wider global restructuring

Paramount Skydance first announced the closures in October as part of major cost reductions tied to the company’s merger and strategic portfolio shift. Reports indicate that the company is targeting more than $500 million in cuts across international operations.

Although MTV’s flagship channels will continue broadcasting in the UK and other territories, the remaining stations primarily focus on reality television rather than music-based programming. MTV HD will also remain available but without music video rotation. Several regions outside the UK were also affected, including Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil. Meanwhile, the U.S. MTV music channel lineup remains unchanged, though recent years have also seen cuts to long-running series, including Catfish and Ridiculousness.

A farewell to one of music television’s most influential eras

Originally launched in the United States in 1981, the channel expanded into Europe and the UK in 1987 before launching a dedicated UK channel a decade later. MTV Music followed in 2011, eventually growing into a multi-channel ecosystem celebrating decades of music heritage. The decision to close its dedicated music outlets arrives after other recent cuts, including the cancellation of the MTV Europe Music Awards and MTV Latin America’s MIAW Awards. With the shutdown now complete, MTV has formally transitioned away from the format that defined its cultural legacy for generations. For many viewers, it marks the official end of the music-video-only television era.
