Mexican authorities have opened a formal investigation into the murder of a local worker that occurred during a music festival in Tulum, with officials currently examining a possible connection to drug trafficking activities.

According to the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office, the victim was a male temporary worker employed at a local hotel. Investigators confirmed that two unidentified individuals led the man away from the festival site before shooting and killing him early Friday morning.

Shooting Occurred Away From Festival Grounds

Authorities report that the incident took place on a nearby dirt road, not within the main festival area itself. The ongoing music event, which began Thursday night, may have masked the sound of gunfire. Police believe the victim relocated with the two men before the shooting occurred, though officials have not released further details regarding the motive or suspects at this stage.

The body was discovered Friday morning. Initial reports indicate that private security guards controlled access to the festival’s private property, which may have delayed police entry to the surrounding area where the crime occurred.

Authorities Focus on Targeted Attack

In an official statement, the Attorney General’s Office described the killing as a targeted attack and stated that it did not pose a direct threat to festival attendees. Prosecutors confirmed that drug-related activity remains the primary line of investigation, while they continue to examine other possible motives. “All levels of government are working together to identify and apprehend those responsible,” the agency stated, reiterating its commitment to zero impunity and accountability.

Authorities Urge Stronger Protection for Residents and Tourists

Following the incident, local authorities reinforced their commitment to public safety across Tulum. Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo called on law enforcement to operate with absolute legality, respect, and loyalty to the people of Tulum, emphasizing that protecting both residents and tourists remains the municipality’s top priority. He stressed the need to strengthen trust among locals and visitors alike, noting that a safe and transparent environment plays a key role in ensuring a positive experience for everyone who comes to the region.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection Edgar Aguilar Rico highlighted measurable progress achieved through inter-institutional cooperation. According to official data, high-impact crimes declined by the end of 2025, with Tulum accounting for just 3.7% of the state total. Authorities also recorded a 61.7% reduction in homicides, a development that led to Tulum’s removal from Mexico’s national list of the 50 priority municipalities for high-impact homicide. City officials confirmed they will maintain these efforts without easing enforcement, aiming to preserve safety and confidence across the destination.

The investigation remains ongoing.
