Home Featured Ghanaian highlife pioneer Ebo Taylor dies aged 90

Arguably one of the most influential musical figures in African society, Ghanaian highlife pioneer Ebo Taylor has passed away at the age of 90.

A pioneering force in Ghanaian highlife music, Ebo Taylor has sadly passed away at the age of 90 years old. Confirming the news through social media, the beloved guitarist, composer, and bandleader left his last breath on February 8th, 2026, a month exactly after his 90th birthday, and a day after the launch of the Ebo Taylor Music Festival.

Enhancing his musical legacy since the late 50s, Taylor acted as a leading figure of the highlife movement in Africa, with his knowledge and expertise also evolving globally, having of course studied music in London alongside Fela Kuti during the 60s. A true advocate of the Ghanaian rhythms, Taylor would return to his homeland, where he blessed fans alike with his soulful music all throughout the 70s and 80s.

Renowned for his unique fusion of funk, jazz, and soul music with Ghana’s traditional musical elements, Taylor was seen as “a colossus of African music,” and as expected, his legacy will remain intact for eternity. A true artist that left an impact on a whole continent and beyond, we would like to convey our sincere condolences for Taylor’s passing and send all the strength to his family, friends, and fans around the world.
