Éliane Radigue, legendary French synth composer, passes away at 95
With a career dating back to the 1950s, Éliane Radigue certainly witnessed plenty of profound changes within the music industry. The French producer would find her footing with the advent of the synthesizer, blazing a path that was all her own.
When starting to pursue her own career, Éliane Radigue found herself under the tutelage of Pierre Schaeffer, gaining knowledge of his musique concrète composition style. Radigue would continue her work in the same realm, eventually working at Schaeffer’s Studio d’Essai, as she continued to expand her sound and style. The 60s saw her continuing to work within the musique concrète realm, assisting Pierre Henry as well as crafting her own compositions. All this would build to her fascination with the ARP 2500 modular system, the analog synthesizer that would serve as the foundation of her sound in the 70s.
Continuing to explore tape loops, ambient feedback, and unique soundscapes, Éliane Radigue would carve out her own niche as she explored the possibilities of sound and composition. She would continue to explore soundscapes and electronic instruments throughout her career, delivering her final piece in 2000. Her final electornic work, L’Ile Re-sonante, would earn her Golden Nica Award. It was announced that Éliane Radigue passed away this week at the age of 94.
We send our condolences to the family and friends and invite everyone to explore the compositions of Éliane Radigue below.
