Paul McCartney unveils ‘Man on the Run’ soundtrack alongside new documentary: Listen
Paul McCartney has officially released ‘Man on the Run – Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack’, the companion album to the new documentary chronicling his creative rebirth in the 1970s.
Arriving alongside the feature-length film ‘Paul McCartney: Man on the Run’, directed by Oscar, Emmy and Grammy-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, the project revisits one of the most transformative decades in McCartney’s career – the years following the breakup of The Beatles and the rise of Wings.
A snapshot of Paul McCartney 1970s resurgence
The 12-track soundtrack compiles essential material from McCartney’s solo work and Wings’ catalog, capturing the ambition, reinvention and risk-taking that defined his post-Beatles era. Standout moments include previously unreleased material such as ‘Arrow Through Me (Rough Mix)’, taken from the 1979 Back to the Egg sessions, and ‘Gotta Sing Gotta Dance’, originally featured in the 1973 The James Paul McCartney TV Special.
Another highlight, ‘Live and Let Die (Rockshow)’, revisits the explosive live energy that helped Wings establish themselves as one of the biggest touring acts of the decade. The album flows through milestones including ‘Band on the Run’, ‘Mull of Kintyre’, ‘Coming Up’, and ‘Let Me Roll It’, forming a cohesive narrative of reinvention rather than simply a greatest hits collection.
Multiple physical editions for collectors
The soundtrack arrives in a range of formats. Fans can choose between:
- Limited edition New York Taxi Yellow vinyl pressed at Jack White’s Third Man Pressing plant
- Limited edition Tangerine Peel Orange vinyl (Amazon exclusive)
- Standard Black vinyl LP
- 1CD edition
- Digital release
Each vinyl edition includes a Man on the Run poster.
Creative direction for the artwork came from Paul McCartney and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell of Hipgnosis, the legendary design studio responsible for eight Wings albums, including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars, and Wings Over America. The final design was completed by Peter Curzon of Storm Studios.
The documentary: stepping out of The Beatles’ shadow
Streaming globally on Prime Video, Paul McCartney: Man on the Run explores McCartney’s journey through the 1970s with archival footage, interviews and rare photography from Linda McCartney. The film also features appearances from Mary McCartney, Stella McCartney, former Wings members, Sean Ono Lennon, Mick Jagger, and Chrissie Hynde.
Director Morgan Neville describes the project as an exploration of how McCartney moved from running away from the shadow of The Beatles to running toward his own creative identity. The film and soundtrack together frame the 1970s not as a postscript, but as a second ascent. “We made what seemed like an impossible dream come true,” McCartney reflected on the era.
The wider Wings renaissance
Furthermore, the release continues a broader revival of Wings’ legacy. In recent years, the publication of Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, alongside a curated anthology collection, new Dolby Atmos mixes, a 50th anniversary edition of Venus and Mars, and additional legs of McCartney’s Got Back tour, have all reinforced that resurgence. Moreover, each project has added new perspective to a period that once sat in the long shadow of The Beatles.
Taken together, therefore, the documentary and its companion soundtrack underline a narrative that now feels increasingly clear: the 1970s were not a transitional period for McCartney, rather, they marked a full reinvention. More than 50 years after forming Wings, Man on the Run reframes that chapter not as an escape from history, but as the moment he built something new.
