Recording Academy addresses AI concerns in its new guidelines
Recently, the Recording Academy announced updated eligibility guidelines for the Grammy Awards that address the growing use of AI in music creation. Under the revised rules, only recordings that include a “significant human creative contribution” will be considered eligible for Grammy recognition. Works that are fully generated by AI without meaningful human involvement are excluded from consideration.
According to the Academy, the guidelines are intended to preserve human creativity as AI tools become integral to music workflows. Notable, the policy does not prohibit the use of AI. Instead, it allows AI-assisted processes if humans remain the primary creators. The rules apply across all award categories and was in effect for the recent Grammy Awards.
However, the Academy has not outlined specific technical or quantitative standards for determining what qualifies as “significant” human contribution. This lack of definition leaves room for interpretation. Modern music production frequently relies on AI tools for their workflow. As a result, artists and producers may face uncertainty when assessing whether their work meets eligibility requirements.
The Recording Academy also acknowledged challenges related to authorship, transparency, and enforcement. At present, eligibility determinations rely largely on disclosures made during the submission process, and no independent verification framework has been announced. As AI’s role in music technology continues to advance, the Academy stated it will continue reviewing and refining its policies to address evolving creative practices and industry concerns.
