Apple Music has introduced new metadata tags that allow record labels and distributors to disclose when artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of music, artwork, or visual media associated with releases on the platform. The development was first reported by 9to5Mac.

According to an email sent to Apple Music partners, the new “Transparency Tags” will apply to future content delivered to the platform. Labels and distributors will now be able to indicate when a “material portion” of a release has been created using AI technologies.

The update introduces four distinct tag categories covering the key creative components of digital music releases.

Artwork tags can be applied when artificial intelligence was used to generate a significant portion of an album’s artwork. This includes both static cover art and motion graphics associated with a release.

Track tags indicate that AI was used to generate a material portion of the sound recording itself. These tags are applied specifically at the track level.

Composition tags apply when artificial intelligence contributes to the songwriting process. This may include AI-generated lyrics or other compositional elements within a track.

Finally, Music Video tags can be used when AI was responsible for generating key visual elements in a music video, whether the video is bundled with an album release or distributed as standalone content.

Multiple transparency tags can be applied to the same release if needed. For instance, a track could carry both a composition and track tag if AI played a role in generating both the musical structure and the audio recording, while the release artwork may also include an AI-generated artwork tag.

Apple notes that it will leave it up to each partner to determine what qualifies as AI-generated content. This approach is similar to how distribution partners currently manage metadata categories such as genres, credits, and contributor roles.

The company says the introduction of transparency tags is intended to bring greater clarity around the role of artificial intelligence in creative production as generative tools become more widely used across the music industry.
