Armin van Buuren joined Apple Music executives during Winter Music Conference in Miami for a panel exploring the evolving landscape of dance music and DJ culture.

During the discussion on March 25, the Dutch trance pioneer sat alongside Stephen Campbell, Global Head of Dance, Electronic & DJ Mixes at Apple Music, and Tim Sweeney, longtime host of Beats In Space. Together, they examined how DJ mixes, immersive audio technology and genre trends continue to reshape how audiences experience electronic music.

Trance’s resurgence and staying authentic

Reflecting on his career, Armin van Buuren also addressed the renewed interest in trance music. For years, the genre faced criticism during the peak of the EDM era, yet he remained committed to its melodic identity.

“Trance isn’t a dirty word anymore,” he said. “For a long time we were seen as the ‘EDM whatever,’ not the cool guys. And suddenly it’s like an old sweater you’ve worn for 25 years becomes fashionable again.”

The DJ explained that authenticity remains essential for longevity in music. Rather than following trends, artists must commit to the sound that truly represents them.

The impact of AI and new technology

The conversation also touched on the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in music creation. While acknowledging the concerns many artists share, van Buuren emphasized that ignoring technological change could leave creators behind.

“We’re entering a new era,” he explained. “The AI we’re using right now is the worst AI we will ever use… it can only get better.”

Beyond AI, the panel highlighted the growing importance of Spatial Audio and properly licensed DJ mixes. These technologies allow platforms like Apple Music to preserve historic DJ sets while delivering more immersive listening experiences for fans worldwide.

Ultimately, the discussion reinforced how rapidly the dance music ecosystem continues to evolve. As streaming platforms expand immersive formats and DJs embrace new creative tools, artists like Armin van Buuren remain at the center of a changing global scene.
