Avicii’s ‘The Crowning of Prince Liam’ road trip revisited

Nine years ago, Avicii embarked on a unique journey across the United States that would later become known as ‘The Crowning of Prince Liam’.

Named after Tim Bergling’s dog Liam, the road trip began in Malibu and eventually concluded in Miami, where Avicii performed his final set at Ultra Music Festival in 2016. Along the way, he and his collaborators wrote and recorded music in mobile studios placed inside national parks and scenic locations across the country. As a result, the trip blended travel, creativity, and experimentation in a way rarely seen within electronic music production.

Before the journey began, the team gathered in a rented house in Malibu to plan the logistics. However, organizing recording sessions in national parks proved complicated. The group needed permits, locations for studio setups, and reliable access to power and equipment. Despite the challenges, Avicii remained confident that the concept would work.

“That’s what I mean. You have to be smart and visualize it! Because of course it exists. It exists everywhere! These are gigantic parks so of course there are viewpoints where you can sit. This isn’t difficult!” he said while encouraging the team to move forward with the plan.

Meanwhile, collaborator Dhani Lennevald remembered how quickly the idea turned into reality. “They started to plan the spots we were gonna go to, like the Grand Canyon, and we were just like, ‘Is this really gonna happen?’ Then within three or four days everything just came together.”

For the trip, the team designed custom jackets featuring “2016” and a map of the United States on the back. Over time, those jackets became symbolic of the journey itself, and Avicii’s original piece now appears on display at the Avicii Experience museum in Stockholm.
