David Morales shares rare photo from Paradise Garage days
David Morales recently shared a rare throwback photo from one of the most legendary dance music venues in history – Paradise Garage in New York City.
In the image, Morales stands behind the decks during the early years of his career. At the time, he was only 21 years old, making the moment even more significant considering the club’s status within dance music culture. Reflecting on the experience, Morales emphasized how special it felt to play at the venue so early in his journey.
“This is a picture when I played at the Paradise Garage, I was 21 years old, back in 1984,” he wrote. “My first New York club was the biggest and most amazing club in the world… it’s still to this day, in my opinion, the most incredible club out there.”
Opened in 1977, Paradise Garage quickly became one of the most influential nightclubs in dance music history. The venue built its reputation around its powerful sound system, inclusive atmosphere, and a philosophy that placed music and dancefloor energy above everything else. Unlike many nightlife venues, the club avoided VIP sections and status culture, focusing entirely on the shared experience of music.
Morales highlighted this ethos when reflecting on the club’s legacy. “There are two most amazing clubs in the world you can’t dismiss – The Loft and The Paradise Garage – because they stood for music. No VIP… it was all about the music, and people went there to dance and express themselves.”
When Paradise Garage defined the dancefloor
Over time, Paradise Garage helped shape the foundations of house music and club culture globally. DJs such as Larry Levan, the club’s iconic resident, pushed boundaries with long, emotionally driven sets that influenced generations of artists.
For David Morales, who would later become one of house music’s most respected producers and DJs, stepping into that booth at such a young age represented the beginning of a remarkable career deeply connected to dance music history.
