Goldie releases ‘The Rufige Files’ documentary exploring the legacy of Rufige Kru
Goldie has unveiled a brand-new documentary titled ‘The Rufige Files’, offering an in-depth look at the history, sound and creative philosophy behind his influential Rufige Kru project. The feature-length film arrives as a celebration of one of the most important forces in the evolution of drum and bass and jungle music.
Produced and directed by Goldie, Army Of Few, and London Records, the documentary traces the origins of Rufige Kru from its earliest releases to its modern-day resurgence. Through interviews with key figures including Photek, dBridge, Marc Mac, Heist, and longtime collaborator Submotive, the film explores how the project developed a distinct sonic identity that continues to resonate across generations of bass music.
Revisiting the roots of Rufige Kru
The documentary revisits the earliest moments of the Rufige Kru story, including the release of the debut ‘Dark Rider’ EP on Reinforced Records. Meanwhile, the iconic track ‘Terminator’ also receives particular attention in the film, widely recognized as a defining statement of the Rufige sound and one of the most influential jungle productions of its era.
Furthermore, the film also highlights the recent ‘Alpha Omega’ project, a full-length album released last year that earned a nomination for DJ Mag’s Best Album of the Year. For that project, Goldie and his collaborators revisited original 1990s Digital Audio Tapes (DATs) in order to recover archival samples and rebuild elements of the original Rufige sonic aesthetic.
A central theme throughout ‘The Rufige Files’ revolves around the contrast between light and darkness, a creative duality that has shaped Rufige Kru’s music for decades. Goldie connects this concept to his early background in graffiti culture, where visual art and music often shared similar emotional contrasts.
Now active in urban arts for more than three decades, Goldie also reflects on his motivations as an artist. In the documentary, he explains that his creative drive has never revolved around metrics such as streams or online engagement, but rather around the process of making music itself.
