Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn set to score AI film about ChatGPT founders
Opening up in a recent interview, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has confirmed the composition score for the new AI-focused film, Artificial.
Expanding his work into the big screen territory, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has now revealed that he is composing the score for Artificial, a new Luca Guadagnino film based around the founders of ChatGPT. Reflecting on the role of AI in creativity, Albarn opened up on the subject during an interview with Anthony Fantano on The Needle Drop, also stating: “Music and art should not be easy… Once it becomes easy, it’s meaningless.”
Focusing on the dramatic five-day period back in 2023 when Sam Altman was fired and later reinstated as CEO of OpenAI, the film evolves around that very moment, with Andrew Garfield playing the role of Altman, whilst Ike Barinholtz takes on the role of Elon Musk. Moreover, the cast of Artificial also includes the likes of Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Mark Rylance.
A film that very much evolves around AI and its use within today’s society, Albarn also opened up on the score itself, with both electronic and orchestral elements set to feature wildly, as well as songs that he will be performing himself. One to most certainly keep an eye on, Albarn is illustrating the versatility within his work, and with Gorillaz having released their ninth studio album in the form of ‘The Mountain,’ it is fair to say that this is yet another productive year by one of our scene’s all-time greats.
