Deezer has signed a deal with Hungarian music rights organization, the Bureau for the Protection of Performers’ Rights (EJI) to license its AI detection technology. Under the agreement, EJI will use Deezer’s recently launched tool to identify AI-generated recordings, becoming the first Hungarian collecting society capable of detecting generative AI in music.

Why this move makes sense for Deezer and EJI?

EJI does not pay royalties on recordings created using generative AI, making AI-detection a key part of its rights management strategy. Deezer revealed earlier this year that it receives around 60,000 fully AI-generated tracks daily, accounting for roughly 39% of all uploads. The platform also found that up to 85% of streams on such content were fraudulent, leading to their demonetization. The agreement comes after both companies were previously involved in a legal dispute in 2016, ironically, over performers’ rights. Since then, they say they have worked together to “create a transparent online music market that respects the interests of all parties”.

What has been said about the deal?

Regarding the deal, Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said, “Over the past few years, we have built the most advanced AI detection technology in the industry, and we are making it available to the entire music ecosystem.” Further, he added, “Music is a human creation and right-holders should be protected.” Pál Tomori, EJI Director stated, “Filtering out recordings made by AI is necessary. However, this is not enough by itself, as the training of AI should only be permitted with the artists’ consent and compensation in the first place.”

The move comes as Deezer looks to expand its Deezer for Business platform by offering AI detection tools to the wider industry.
