French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked conversation online after using a track by Justice in a social media post promoting the country’s nuclear deterrent capabilities.

The official @elysee Instagram account, representing the French Presidency, shared an image of one of France’s nuclear warheads following Macron’s visit to the Île Longue military base in Crozon on March 3. The video accompanying the post featured ‘Genesis’, the opening track from Justice’s influential 2007 album ‘Cross’.

The post included a quote from a speech delivered by Macron during the visit, emphasizing the strategic importance of France’s nuclear arsenal.

“Our country has this uncommon weapon that is the nuclear weapon, and it makes it the basis of its security,” Macron said. “If we were to use our arsenal, no state, however powerful, could withstand it, and no [state], however vast, would recover.”

Justice soundtrack choice sparks online reactions

However, much of the attention quickly shifted to the unexpected music choice. Instagram users flooded the comments, reacting to the use of the iconic French electronic track in a post about nuclear defense.

One user wrote: “I would never have imagined listening to Justice while looking at a submarine containing a nuclear weapon when I was at their concert in 2009.”

Meanwhile, French DJ and production duo GROSSOMODDO also reacted in the comments, writing: “+1 for the musical choice.” Another commenter tagged Justice, asking whether the duo approved the use of their music in the post.

Macron’s support for French electronic music

Interestingly, this is not the first time Macron has publicly highlighted French electronic music culture. In 2025, the French government supported an initiative to recognize French touch — the influential house music movement associated with artists such as Justice, Daft Punk, and Cassius — as part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage framework.

Later that year, French touch officially entered France’s national list of intangible cultural heritage, marking an important first step toward potential recognition by UNESCO.

While the Instagram post focused on national defense, the unexpected inclusion of Justice’s ‘Genesis’ once again demonstrated how deeply electronic music has become embedded within modern French cultural identity.
