A potential sequel to Madonna’s iconic album Ray of Light’ may never see the light of day, according to longtime collaborator William Orbit.

The producer, who worked closely with Madonna on the groundbreaking 1998 album ‘Ray of Light’, recently revealed that he actually created what he considers a spiritual follow-up to the record. However, despite preparing the project and reaching out to the pop star, Orbit says the collaboration will not happen.

In a message shared online, William Orbit addressed ongoing fan speculation about a possible reunion. “Is NOT going to happen,” he wrote, explaining that he has received no response from the singer regarding the proposed project.

According to Orbit, the unreleased material fully captures the spirit of the original album. He explained that he already completed an entire body of work that he believes represents a true successor to ‘Ray of Light’, both in its sonic identity and production approach. Still, without Madonna’s involvement, the project remains unfinished and unreleased.

The original ‘Ray of Light’ album marked one of the most important moments in Madonna’s career. Released in 1998, the record blended electronic music with introspective songwriting and helped redefine her artistic direction at the time. Critics widely praised the project, and it later won multiple Grammy Awards, cementing its place among the most influential pop albums of the late 1990s.

While the idea of a sequel may now be off the table, the legacy of ‘Ray of Light’ continues to resonate decades later. For fans who hoped to hear a new chapter from the same creative partnership, William Orbit’s revelation confirms that the rumored follow-up will likely remain one of pop music’s great “what-if” stories.
