Fan-built website MTV Rewind revives the golden era of music television

A fan-built platform called MTV Rewind is bringing the golden era of music television back to life following the shutdown of many of MTV’s 24-hour music channels at the end of 2025. Created by a fan operating under the online name “FlexasaurusRex La Creme” (@rexflexasaurus), the free website recreates the original MTV viewing experience by streaming thousands of archived music videos alongside vintage commercials and classic programming blocks.

Designed as a nostalgic tribute to the network’s early years, MTV Rewind currently hosts more than 90,000 videos spanning from MTV’s launch in 1981 through the modern era. The platform organizes its content across multiple themed channels that follow the network’s chronological evolution, beginning with MTV’s historic first broadcast. On August 1, 1981, the channel famously opened with ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles, a moment widely considered the symbolic start of the music video age.

The site also revives segments from some of MTV’s most iconic shows, including ‘Yo! MTV Raps’, ‘Headbangers Ball’, ‘120 Minutes’, and ‘MTV Unplugged’, recreating the programming style that once defined global youth culture.

The project gained momentum after MTV’s parent company shut down several dedicated music channels across markets such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, France, Poland, and Brazil on New Year’s Eve 2025 as part of broader cost-cutting measures. While the main MTV channel still operates—now primarily focused on reality programming—the closures effectively marked the end of continuous music video broadcasting in many regions.

In response, MTV Rewind offers fans a digital time capsule, preserving the spirit of the music television era that shaped generations of artists and viewers.
