A new large-scale study has revealed that musicians experience significantly higher rates of hearing-related issues compared to the general population. Published in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the research analyzed data from over 28,000 musicians across 21 countries, offering one of the most comprehensive insights into the long-term impact of sound exposure.

According to the findings, 42.6% of musicians reported tinnitus, compared to just 13.2% among non-musicians, highlighting a major gap linked to prolonged exposure to loud environments. At the same time, 25.7% of musicians reported hearing loss, more than double the 11.6% found in control groups.

Additionally, the study revealed that 37.3% of music artists experience hyperacusis, a condition that increases sensitivity to everyday sounds, compared to 15.3% among non-musicians. These findings underline the cumulative impact of repeated exposure to high sound levels across live performances, studio sessions and rehearsals.

Importantly, researchers found no significant difference between classical and electronic or pop artists, suggesting that hearing risk extends across all genres rather than specific scenes.

However, the study also highlighted limitations, as many cases relied on self-reported data rather than clinical testing. Researchers believe the true numbers could be even higher, particularly given inconsistent use of hearing protection among artists.

Ultimately, the findings reinforce a growing conversation within the music industry: protecting hearing remains essential for long-term careers, especially as exposure levels continue to rise across modern live and club environments.
