Roland Launches Melody Flip – an AI Melody Generator
Roland, in collaboration with Sony Computer Science Laboratories (Sony CSL), has announced Melody Flip, a new melody-generation plugin. Roland describes Melody Flip as a “New Approach to Music Creation Where Technology Becomes a Creative Partner”, rather than a replacement.
How Melody Flip Works
Melody Flip allows users to import an audio file, which is analyzed. Key elements like BPM, key, chord progression, structure, genre and mood are then extracted from the file. The software then matches this analysis with a library of around 300 creative palettes, which have been defined as “predefined musical styles and tonal directions”. Based on this, it generates new melodic ideas that users can modify, rearrange or rebuild. The technology behind Melody Flip is based on Sony CSL’s research in AI-assisted music creation. In addition to generating melodies, the tool also helps users better understand the structure and key of their tracks, making it useful for workflow improvement.
What have Roland said about this?
Speaking about the product, Roland CEO and Representative Director Masahiro Minowa said,“Roland has always been committed to supporting the evolution of music culture through electronic musical instruments and production tools. Melody Flip represents a significant step forward in the era of responsibly developed AI, introducing a future in which technology and people work together and elevate creativity. As we move forward, Roland will continue to expand the boundaries of musical expression with innovative products and services that amplify creators’ instincts and connect human sensitivity with the full potential of technology.”
Melody Flip will be available for major DAWs on macOS and Windows. Users can export melodies, as well as stems and parts like chords, bass and drums, in both audio and MIDI formats. While not much is known about the pricing, the software will be available on Roland Cloud Manager, with a free trial launching in May 2026.
