The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’ turns 30 – the track that changed dance music forever

Home News The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’ turns 30 – the track that changed dance music forever

The Prodigy groundbreaking ‘Firestarter’ just turned 30 years old today, and somehow, it still sounds as raw and disruptive as it did back in 1996.

Released via XL Recordings, the track became the group’s first UK No.1 single, marking a pivotal moment not only for the band but for electronic music as a whole. At the time, The Prodigy — led by Liam Howlett alongside Keith Flint and Maxim, were already pushing boundaries, however ‘Firestarter’ took things to an entirely new level.

Built around a sample from The Breeders’ ‘S.O.S.’ and driven by distorted breakbeats and punk-inspired vocals, the track blurred the lines between rave, big beat and alternative rock, effectively bringing underground energy into the mainstream.

At the same time, the music video became just as iconic as the record itself. Directed by Walter Stern, it featured Keith Flint staring straight into the camera inside a dark tunnel, delivering a chaotic and confrontational performance that defined the track’s identity. Back when it aired on MTV, it became one of those moments where everything stopped, you had to watch.

Looking back, ‘Firestarter’ didn’t just succeed commercially, it shifted perception. It showed that electronic music could carry attitude, rebellion and personality in a way that rivaled rock acts of the era.

Ultimately, the track represents a turning point where dance music stopped asking for permission and simply took over.
