Universal Audio has discounted the SSL 4000 E Channel Strip to $69, down from $149, as part of a 53% promotion available until March 31.

The plugin recreates the sound and workflow of the legendary Solid State Logic 4000 E Console, one of the most influential mixing desks in modern music production. The console’s sound has shaped countless hit records, including Nevermind by Nirvana and 24K Magic by Bruno Mars.

Now available as a UAD Native plugin, the SSL 4000 E Channel Strip brings the classic console’s EQ, dynamics processing, and preamp coloration directly into modern DAWs without requiring dedicated hardware.

Authentic SSL Channel Strip Modeling

Universal Audio’s engineers modeled key components of the original console, including the Jensen transformer-based preamp input stage and the dbx “gold-can” VCA output section. This approach captures the nonlinear behavior and dynamic response that give the SSL console its characteristic punch and clarity.

The plugin is designed to deliver the signature expansive low-end, aggressive midrange presence, and tight dynamic control associated with classic SSL mixing desks.

Dual Classic EQ Types

The SSL 4000 E Channel Strip includes two versions of the console’s four-band EQ:

• Type E 242 “Black Knob” EQ – more precise and surgical for corrective mixing tasks
• Type E 001 “Brown Knob” EQ – smoother and more musical for tonal shaping

Both EQ types replicate the distinctive band interactions and amplifier behavior of the original hardware, making them particularly effective for drums, vocals, guitars, and bass.

Dynamics Section and Flexible Routing

In addition to EQ, the plugin features the console’s VCA compressor and gate/expander, which are widely used for controlling dynamics and adding punch to individual tracks or buses.

Flexible routing options allow users to place EQ or filters before the dynamics section, or route them into the compressor’s sidechain for more advanced frequency-dependent compression techniques.

Compatibility and Workflow

The plugin supports external sidechaining and runs natively in modern DAWs without requiring an Universal Audio Apollo interface. However, when paired with Apollo hardware, users can access Unison Technology, which replicates the original console’s preamp impedance and gain staging when tracking vocals or instruments.

The plugin also includes artist presets created by engineers such as Just Blaze, Ryan Hewitt, and Ian Boxill.
