Released in early 2026, LANDR Layers is an AI-powered instrumental stem generator developed in collaboration with Aiode. It is part of the LANDR ecosystem, designed to complement LANDR Blueprints. While Blueprints is aimed at generating song-starters from scratch (harmonies, melodies, rhythms and even vocals), Layers creates specific instrument performances that adapt to the existing audio’s key, tempo, and rhythm.

A great thing about using LANDR’s AI services is that the models follow the Fair Trade AI program, which means they are trained exclusively on recordings from musicians who have opted into the program. These contributors receive a revenue share of all the proceeds from purchases/subscription payments for the AI tools.

After extensive testing, here’s a detailed breakdown of how LANDR Layers works and performs in real-world use.

The Workflow

Layers is a standalone application rather than a traditional plugin. It’s structured similar to a DAW, with an arrangement view and tracks for each sound type. To begin, you can import your own audio as a reference point, or just start from scratch with an empty project. Either way, you must first select the time signature and BPM (there is no option for mixed time signatures or changing BPM).

It’s recommended to start with a reference point, which can be a chord progression, melody, drum beat or an entire song. Layers analyzes this reference so that anything you generate fits with the harmony and rhythm of your track.

The Generation Engines

After setting the context, you add tracks by selecting from three distinct AI engines. Each engine serves a different purpose in the arrangement:

Musician Models are instrument-based generation engines that have been trained on professional session musicians. These include a Drummer, Electric Bassist, Trumpet Player, Beat Maker (for more electronic drums), Pianist, Synth Bass Producer and Electric Guitarist. Each Musician option is labeled with the attributes and genres that it’s best suited for; for example, the Beat Maker is “Producer-Minded” and specialises in “Hip-Hop”, “Pop” and “Electronic” music.

Layer Models are more versatile and varied, with options for Polish, Rhythm, Orchestral, Unplugged (more acoustic sounds), and Electro. The Layer Models can generate more complex and multi-layered results, but are also more random and have less options for specialisation. They also include tags like “Dramatic”, “Natural” and “ Percussion Layering” so you know the general theme of the generation.

The Sample Remaker is the final option, which allows you to import your own samples and have Layers regenerate them to match the tempo and harmony of your song. This works for both one-shots and loops, although the generation is a bit hit-or-miss, and can turn a simple sample into a full, evolving stem.

Refinements and Variations

After the first attempt at generation, LANDR Layers has a few options for regenerating and refining the sound. For all of the engines, you have the option to generate Variations (which essentially tells the AI to try again), and the option to highlight specific sections for regeneration. However, the Musicians engine has a lot more options than Layers or Sample Remaker. These expanded controls start with the six main styles: Ambience, Rhythm, Harmony, Melody, Solo (for more expressive, instrumental-solo style melodies) and Free (a more free-form style of generation, which combines features from the other styles).

The Musicians also have a separate “Performance” panel for much more hands-on control over the generation. Within this panel, there are three key macros for adjusting the output. Using sliders, you can set a range between minimum and maximum for Dynamics, Complexity and Fills. Dynamics adjusts the dynamic range for added expression and variation, Complexity changes the note density, and Fills controls the amount of ornamental runs and trills to complement the main melody, harmony and rhythm.

Each Musician type also has its own unique Performance options for customizing the generation. For the Bassist, you can choose the type of bass guitar (Jazz, Precision and Fretless), the articulation (Fingers, Pick, Slap and Mute) and the processing (DI, Drive and Octaver). Each Musician engine has similar controls; for example, the trumpet has Mutes, Short, Full, Expressive, and FX as articulations, and the Beat Maker has Modern, Electronic, Sampled and 80s for Kit options. These give you much more control over the output, allowing you to target a desired sound or experiment with different variations.

Once you’re happy with the additional stems that have been generated, the next step is to export. LANDR Layers isn’t meant to be a full DAW, and each track has options to download the file or drag it directly into your main DAW. If in future you need to make any changes to the new stems, you can reopen the project file and import new audio to update the context.

Alongside Blueprints, Layers represents a step forward for LANDR. No longer just an AI mastering tool, it is becoming a leader in AI plugins for faster and more hands-off music creation. Layers is a middle ground between MIDI programming and drag-and-drop style sample selection, giving you more control over the sound than other generation tools. It still has its flaws, often leading to generic and uninspired results, but it has the potential to grow into a formidable tool that may replace session musicians in low-budget productions.
