Jeff Mills has announced ‘The Trip To Vega‘, a new conceptual album landing June 19 on his Axis Records imprint. Notably, the project unfolds as a deep outer space odyssey set in the year 2097. The narrative traces humanity’s permanent departure from Earth toward another star system 25.3 light-years away. The release arrives across triple vinyl and digital formats.

The narrative is bleak and ambitious. Meanwhile, the album’s framing positions Earth as no longer livable for biological life. The cause: constant tectonic shifts that produce a harmonic frequency eroding the natural senses of all life on the planet. In turn, mass evacuation begins.

Crucially, the in-fiction date sits at September 23, 2097. Humans have endured volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, solar bursts and pandemics. Furthermore, the new threat is internal and physical, with the planet itself producing intolerable sound from its core.

Some humans choose to stay. Equally, some interpret the moment as a second coming, while most board the fleet. Spacecraft carrying approximately one million humans per vessel depart every seven days until all registered passengers have left.

The destination is Vega. Crucially, the real-world star sits 25.3 light-years from Earth, surrounded by two debris belts and showing signs of active planet formation. Vega’s rotation period of 12.5 hours flattens its poles, while the star itself burns roughly 40 times brighter than the Sun.

The 11-track digital edition opens with ‘Destination Bright Star’. Furthermore, the album threads through ‘Ten Cycles’, ‘Omega Dust Rings’, ‘Lyra’ and ‘Equinox’. ‘Twenty-Five Light Years Away’, ‘March Of The Purple Orbs’ and ‘Terraform’ follow. ‘Alpha Quadrant’, ‘Orbiting The Star’ and ‘Circumstellar Debris’ close out the run.

Still, the project sits in line with Jeff Mills’ wider career-long fascination with space, time and cosmic narrative. His prior conceptual works include ‘The Drone Experiment’, ‘Sleeper Wakes’ and orchestral collaborations on ‘Light From The Outside World’. The Detroit techno innovator continues to push the genre into long-form storytelling.

The triple vinyl edition will run as a collector format. Moreover, distribution sits across NEWS, The Orchard and Axis direct.

Finally, ‘The Trip To Vega’ arrives June 19 via Axis. Jeff Mills frames the project as a consequence rather than a warning, with no lesson to learn beyond the decision itself.
