With frustration over overtourism growing daily, a recent survey conducted by the Majorca Daily Bulletin found that residents across Spain’s Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, are now calling for limits on visitor numbers in their region, citing mounting concerns about overcrowding, rising housing costs, and increasing strain on local infrastructure.
Surveying 2,008 residents across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the results made clear that public support leans strongly toward new regulations aimed at reducing tourism pressure on the islands, with 69.1% of respondents favouring the introduction of a cap on tourist numbers, 68.4% supporting restrictions on tourist accommodation and businesses that primarily serve visitors, and 80.5% backing limits on holiday rentals as a way to help address rising housing costs for locals.
An ongoing challenge for all involved, each island faces its own pressures year after year, with Ibiza’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading party destinations making it particularly affected.
