Pink Punters, the long-running LGBTQ+ nightclub near Milton Keynes, burned down in the early hours of Sunday, April 26. Notably, hundreds of clubbers had to evacuate as flames tore through the venue. Police arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

The fire broke out on an outside balcony at the Fenny Stratford venue. Meanwhile, the building itself now sits as a complete loss. Fortunately, no staff or customers picked up injuries during the evacuation, and everyone made it home safely.

Owner Frank McMahon shared a statement in the aftermath. “I’m deeply relieved, grateful and proud to confirm that no staff or customers were harmed,” he said. “Everybody went home safely.” McMahon framed the loss of the building as devastating but stressed the priority on lives over the structure.

Crucially, Pink Punters had been open for more than two decades and held a central place in Milton Keynes nightlife. Furthermore, the venue served as a key LGBTQ+ space across the wider region, hosting club nights, drag performances and community events.

The 51-year-old suspect remained in police custody at the time of reporting. In turn, officers have asked the public not to speculate on motive while the investigation continues.

Equally, the local LGBTQ+ community responded fast. Messages of support flooded the venue’s social channels, alongside calls for fundraising to help with rebuilding. Still, the team has not yet announced a concrete rebuild timeline.

Finally, the loss reignites wider concerns about the safety of LGBTQ+ nightlife venues across the UK. Pink Punters joins a list of beloved spaces that have closed or burned in recent years, with each loss removing another corner of community-led nightlife from the map.
