FJAAK call this free plugin a must-have for mastering
Berlin techno duo FJAAK have called out a free plugin by Audio Damage as a must-use tool for anyone serious about getting a big, punchy sound — and the fact that it costs nothing is part of the point.
The recommendation comes from their live performance masterclass released in collaboration with Echio, an education platform focused on electronic music production. In the session, the duo describes Audio Damage RoughRider 3 as a “cheat code,” making the case that free plugins like this one are handing producers some of the most useful production knowledge available at no cost.
“RoughRider 3 is a cheat code,” one of the duo says. “These are free plug-ins. So everybody go for it.”
The praise is rooted in what Audio Damage RoughRider 3 actually does to a sound rather than what it costs. FJAAK describe good compression as something that adds colour and character — not just tames dynamics — and RoughRider delivers that in a way that is immediately audible. “A hell of a compressor adds colour to it,” they explain. “So your sound just sounds big and pumpy.”
What is Audio Damage RoughRider 3?

RoughRider 3 is the latest version of Audio Damage’s long-running compressor. It is used daily by producers across genres for its ability to add aggressive, pump-heavy compression with a distinct warm character.
Version 3 added an external sidechain input, a full bandwidth mode that disables the built-in warming filter, and more accurate metering — all while keeping the plugin entirely free. It is available in VST, AU, and AAX formats, compatible with all major DAWs.
FJAAK are a Berlin-based techno and electro duo known for their hardware-heavy approach to live performance. Their sound draws on drum machines, modular synths, sequencers, and effects routing, with no reliance on grid-locked laptop setups — an approach that has defined their reputation across a decade of releases and live sets.
RoughRider 3 is available as a free download from the Audio Damage website.
