Google’s Gemini May Spark Comeback of Third-Party Smart Speakers
Google’s shift to Gemini-powered assistants could signal a return of third-party smart speakers, alongside its own upcoming hardware refresh. A new listing on the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) database has revealed an “Onn Smart Speaker” from Walmart, featuring Gemini voice controls.
New Gemini Smart Speaker Surfaces
According to the now deleted listing, the speaker integrates voice assistant, audio playback and smart home control in a single device.
The device also comes with:
- 10W speaker output
- Far-field microphone array
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
- Google Cast support for streaming
- Physical controls and a microphone privacy switch
Could Third-Party Speakers Return?
Third-party smart speakers powered by Google Assistant were once widely available, with brands like JBL offering multiple options for the same. However, that ecosystem has largely disappeared in recent years. The emergence of Gemini-powered devices could suggest a possible revival of that category, with new hardware partners entering the space again.
While a release timeline has not yet been confirmed on the smart speaker from Walmart, Google is also expected to launch a new Home Speaker, its first major update to the category in years.
