Harvey McKay, Scottish techno producer and Drumcode affiliate, has died
Harvey McKay has died. The Scottish DJ and producer was a respected figure in European techno, with a catalogue spanning Drumcode, Soma, Cocoon and Perc Trax. Drumcode has not disclosed a cause of death.
The label broke the news on Instagram on May 21. The post called his sound “powerful and distinctive”. “Across his releases on Drumcode, Harvey brought a powerful and distinctive sound that left a lasting mark on the label and the wider techno scene,” the label wrote. “His music, energy and presence will not be forgotten.”
Originally from Glasgow, McKay first emerged in the late ’00s. He built his reputation around the driving, soulful brand of techno that defined that era. Early on, his output came through Soma, Cocoon and Perc Trax. Then he kept releasing steadily across the years, with an EP on Hardgroove and a single on Cocoon coming as recently as last year.
Beyond his studio work, McKay was a regular on the European club circuit. He performed across Scotland and also toured further afield. Awakenings, Studio 338, Uebel & Gefährlich, Creamfields and Fabrik all hosted him over the years. Plus, he had a date booked at London’s Starlane Pizza Bar next month.
Now, tributes are landing across the scene. Harvey McKay’s catalogue helped shape a sound that defined a generation of European techno, and the community feels his loss deeply. Read Drumcode’s full statement on Instagram.
