Home Tech Spotify retires its Viral 50 charts with no replacement announced

Spotify has discontinued its Viral 50 charts — the daily and weekly rankings that tracked which songs were gaining the most traction on the platform through engagement, shares, and new listener discovery.

The Spotify viral charts have been removed quietly, with no formal announcement from the company. The Global Viral 50 playlist now returns a “Playlist is unavailable” error, and Spotify’s charts website no longer displays a Viral section.

Listeners can still access trending music through Spotify’s Top Charts and editorial playlists, including the existing Viral Hits playlist, which is curated by human editors rather than generated algorithmically.

What the Viral 50 was

The Viral 50 was a distinct product from Spotify’s standard streaming charts. Where the Top 50 and Top 200 are determined by raw eligible stream counts, the Viral charts measured buzz — recent surges in plays, share activity, and new listener growth. The charts were available at country and city level, giving labels, managers, and artists a way to track organic momentum separately from overall streaming popularity.

Why Spotify removed the viral charts

Official reasons have not been confirmed, though one likely factor is the difficulty of keeping engagement-based charts clean. AI-generated tracks and coordinated streaming activity have increasingly distorted buzz-oriented metrics across platforms. A source close to the matter told Billboard there were concerns the Viral charts did not accurately represent songs with genuine traction, and that the human-curated Viral Hits playlist would give Spotify more editorial control over what surfaces.

For producers and artists tracking music discovery metrics, Spotify’s editorial playlists now represent the primary route to visibility on the platform outside of raw stream performance. Whether Spotify introduces a replacement metric has not been confirmed.
