What is the SSL LMC+?
The SSL LMC+ is a plugin recreation of the Listen Mic Compressor built into the SSL 4000E console. The circuit was not designed as a production tool. It was built to feed a monitor mix during tracking. Applied to a drum room mic and driven hard, it produced the extreme hyper-compressed character behind the gated reverb sound on records by Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, and most 1980s pop production that followed. SSL’s plugin version brings that circuit to a modern workflow with additional controls the hardware never had.

The sidechain signal path includes variable high-pass and low-pass filters, letting you shape what the detector responds to. The Scoop control cuts mid-range from the detection signal, which prevents the compressor from clamping down on kick drum energy when the goal is to respond to snare and room. Split introduces parallel compression at the detection stage; Mix blends the processed and dry signals at the output. External sidechain input is supported, making the LMC+ usable as a general dynamic processor beyond its original application.
