The story behind the unreleased Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso and Tiësto collab ‘Generations’

Home Featured The story behind the unreleased Avicii, Sebastian Ingrosso and Tiësto collab ‘Generations’

Avicii, Tiësto and Sebastian Ingrosso once worked on a collaboration called ‘Generations’, and it never came out. The story of the unreleased golden-era three-way still circulates among fans, and a rare interview clip with Avicii himself remains the only direct confirmation.

Crucially, Avicii spoke about it in his own words. “A collaboration with Tiësto and Ingrosso, which is gonna be called Generations, it’s going to be fun seeing all you know all these different generations, Tiësto is kind of oldschool and Seb is kinda more ‘nowschool’ / ‘newschool’, it’s going to be fun seeing how this collaboration is going to turn out,” he said.

Notably, the framing tells you what the track was meant to be. Tiësto brought the trance and progressive lineage. Sebastian Ingrosso brought the Swedish big-room peak. Avicii sat in the middle as the breakout star bridging both eras.

Furthermore, the trio shared a real history. Avicii and Ingrosso built ‘Calling (Lose My Mind)’ together in 2012. Meanwhile, Tiësto had championed Tim Bergling early through his Club Life show. As a result, a three-way collab felt like the natural next step.

Indeed, ‘Generations’ still sits in the imagination of fans as one of the great what-ifs of the EDM golden era. Equally, with Avicii‘s 2018 passing, the chances of an official version arriving fade further every year. In short, it remains a track everyone talks about but no one has heard.

Still, the Avicii catalogue continues to expand through tributes, reissues and posthumous releases. Crucially, fans hope ‘Generations’ might one day surface in some form, even as a demo.
