Home Industry Juno Download shuts down after more than two decades without any warning

Juno Download, one of the longest-running digital music stores in electronic music, shut down on June 1, 2026 without any prior announcement. Users who visited the site found a brief farewell message in place of the storefront. No countdown, no final sale, no warning.

The message read: “It’s been our privilege to share some of the most incredible music from the most amazing artists. But we’re sorry to say, that the time has come to say goodbye.”

A two-decade institution for underground music

Juno Download launched in 2006 and became a go-to destination for DJs and collectors seeking electronic music across techno, house, drum and bass, jungle, and everything in between. For many producers and DJs — including those coming up through the underground scene — it was one of the primary places to buy and discover music outside of Beatport and Traxsource.

The platform was later sold to a US company in 2013. Its social media accounts were deleted simultaneously with the shutdown. Customers who had previously purchased music can still access and re-download their purchases through their accounts, and support remains available for account-related queries.

Why it closed

Juno Download COO Lucas Garcia cited the structural shift in how people consume music as the driving factor. “As streaming has become the dominant model of digital music consumption, artists and labels are now more connected than ever with their fans via social media and direct-to-fan services like Bandcamp,” Garcia said. “The role of the music webstore is becoming less significant.”

The closure is a notable moment for the electronic music ecosystem. Download stores were once central infrastructure for the scene — particularly for DJs who needed high-quality WAV and AIFF files rather than streaming-quality audio. The music industry overall continues to grow, but the download model has been in decline for years as streaming and Bandcamp-style direct sales have taken over.

Juno Records is still open

It is worth noting that Juno Download and Juno Records are separate companies that parted ways in the early 2010s. Juno Records — the vinyl retail arm at juno.co.uk — remains open and unaffected by this closure. Independent labels, which make up a significant and growing share of electronic music releases, will now need to rely more heavily on Beatport, Traxsource, and Bandcamp to reach their core audience through download sales.
